Notes: Provisions For The Hereafter – Season 2, Lesson 25

April 30, 2016 by Sajid Umar 6 Comments

Provisions For The Hereafter – Summary Notes: Lesson 25
Lesson 25: 30/4/16

Review on charity & zakah:

– The Prophet (s) said: “No soul shall taste death until that soul consumes the last morsel Allah has decreed for that soul.”
– Charity is a sign and strength of ones tawakkul
– Be a person that can become full whilst eating less
– We are so addicted to our wants over our needs – this is a sign that our life is void of barakah
– “Verily your wealth and children are a fitnah (test) for you.” (8:28)
– A manufacturer of a car will know how it works because it knows the parts. Allah knows us best so He knows what to legislate for us.
– Allah commands His prophet to take a portion of his wealth for the poor.

Wisdoms of Zakah:

– To perfect and complete ones Islam
– Zakah purifies ones character and is a protection from stinginess and miserliness
– Protection from becoming a victim of time – attachment to life, children and wealth
– Zakah is thw rainfall that falls on your barran heart. It grants your heart life and softens it
– When Allah speaks about the hardened heart He follows it with the ayah, “Know that Allah gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. We have made clear to you the signs; perhaps you will understand.” (57:17)
– Brings about innate peace and joy. The people who give experience a joy they can’t describe
– There is no one thing that makes up happiness as a whole
– The best way to express happiness: practice good deeds
– “Whoever does righteous deeds whether male or female while he (is) a believer, then surely We will give him life, a life good, and We will pay them their reward to (the) best of what they used (to) do.” (16:97)
– Ibn Qayyim: [paraphrased] “Give from your heart not your hand…”
– Our wealth should be in our hand not our hearts
– Zuhd is not living as though Allah has not given you, its about living with the worlds in your hands and Allah in your heart.

– Use whatever you have in this dunya for the betterment and of your hereafter.
– There is no obedience to the creation in disobedience to the Creator

– Zakah makes the Muslim society one society
– Zakah helps relieve the stress of the poor.
– Eatin and drinking from gold and silver is impermissible, one of the reasons is because the shariah is sensitive to our needs. Imagine how the poor would feel watching us eat from gold and silver utensils?

Short inspirational story:

– Once a student was walking with a Sheikh in an african country, the student saw some chocolate, because they were walking for a long time the student felt hungry. He went to a shop and bought two fancy chocolates. He caught up with the sheikh and gave him his chocolate. The student opened his chocolate and began eating but the sheikh didn’t. So he asked him twice to open. The Sheikh kept sating “Okay inshaAllah.” After a while, the student spoke again asked again, this time becoming offended and began to ask questions. The Sheikh took him to the side and whispered in his ear: “We are walking here and there are a lot of poor people around us and I do not want to open it in front of them as I don’t want their hearts to become attached to it whilst they can’t have it.”

– Zakah is a salvation from the heat of the DOJ. “The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.” – Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 604
– The bigger the charity = the bigger the shade
– Sheikh Ibn Baz (r) used to often say: “Do not belittle yourself” meaning, don’t belittle any act of goodness. The Prophet (s) said: “Every act of goodness is charity.” – Sahih Muslim, Hadith 496
– Zakah extinguishes the anger of Allah and some narration say it wrestles a bad calamity. The Prophet (s) said: “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” – Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 589

Zakah also has physical benefits:
– Helps create a society that is void of crime such as stealing, bribery and corruption
– Helps build a robust economy.
– Don’t understimate the power of zakah in changing the world
–  200 billion to a trillion dollars of zakah can be payed across the earth

Zakah is compulsary on:
– Gold/silver (or anything that represents it such as money)
– Agriculture: fruits/minerals
– Business goods
– Lifestock – camels, cows, goats and sheep

Zakah has conditions:
– The wealth that is zakatable, you have to have a minimum amount of the wealth for a period of one year – then you have to pay zakah.
– How much you pay differs based on the type of wealth you have

Zakah on gold and silver:
– Nisab:
threshold of zakah
– The scholars say that the threshold is 20 nisab (85 grams of gold)
– Silver: Nisa 595 grams
– You should look at the equivalent to 85 grams and 595 grams
– You look at either the threshold of silver and gold, if you have the minimum of the two figures then zakah is compulsary
– You pay 2.5% of your total amount

Zakah on business goods:
– Business man will turn any cash he has into goods to prevent inflation
– He has to work out the cost of all the goods, if the cost of goods is more than the threshold of gold and silver, then he has to pay zakah
– If the poor will not benefit from the goods then the value of the goods must be worked out and payed when the person has it or over a period of time
– Shares are also included in this

Zakah on fruit/vegetables:
– On fruits that can be preserved and stored
– The Nisab for agriculture is 612kg
– It does not require that a year should have passed but should be payed once fruits have been harvested
– 1/10 is to be payed if the land has been naturally watered and 1/20 if it has been irrigated

Zaad will be resumed after Hajj inshaAllah.

Resume date: 24th September 2016

Provisions for the hereafter – Lesson 24: His (s) guidance in the fear prayer

Notes of a student
Lesson 24: 23/5/16

Welcome, to all the new attendees!

Lessons from the passing of Sh Muhammad Ayyub rahimullah:
– How amazing is it that when someone passes away Allah allows the Ummah to serve their legacy and make Du’aa for them.
– Some people teach us how to live in their dying.
– His entire life was dedicated to serving people and being close to the Qur’an.
– Sh Hudhaifi said to the Sheikh just days before he passed away: “The maidens of Jannah are crying for you”
– The lives of such people should be an inspiration to us all of how we should live our life.
– The Qur’an raises us, takes care of us and will be a light and intercessor for us in the next life.
– Never let a day go by without having your sitting with the book of Allah – even if it’s a page or a few ayahs!
– Being close to the Qur’an is a means of attaining the love of Allah and if He loves you then He will place love in the hearts of the people for you.
– “Unquestionably, [for] the allies of Allah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.” (10:62)

Salatul Khawf (The Fear Prayer) – Pg. 104

– There are several hadith of the Prophet (s) regarding different ways of performing the fear prayer. This is because cirumstances differ when at battle.
– “And when you travel throughout the land, there is no blame upon you for shortening the prayer, [especially] if you fear that those who disbelieve may disrupt [or attack] you. Indeed, the disbelievers are ever to you a clear enemy.” (4:101)
– The fear prayer is not restricted to battle only.
– E.g – If you pray you or your property may be harmed

Screen Shot 2016-04-23 at 07.49.59

– Even in battle, Allah commands us to pray in congregation.
– Battles in the past were very different. Armies would camp close to each other for hours.
– There is never a situation where there is no Salaah. You have to always pray in every circumstance.
– The Shariah is very lenient with everything else depending our situation but it will never permit leaving the prayer
– Don’t miss your appointment with Allah!

1) Enemy in a direction opposite to Qiblah
– Had of army divides army into two groups
– Group A faces enemy whilst Group B forms a congregation
– Head of army leads group A in one unit of prayer only
– Group A behind him, complete the prayer by themselves while the imam remains standing
– When Group A have finished the prayer, group B (facing the enemy) will swap and join the congregation and the imam will lead the second unit

Lessons:
– The Shariah is practical and it knows there is no success without Salaah
– This is why the Muadhin calls out, ‘come to prayer, come to success’
– All success begins with Allah, He should be our first point of call
– Be on your salah all the time, increase the voluntary acts of worship to make up
your shortcomings
– If you have missed your salaah, seek sincere forgiveness from Allah and establish the obligatory and voluntary prayers

Regarding his (s) guidance on Zaikai:

– Zakah is a pillar of Islam
– “Take (a portion) of their wealth a compulsary charity.”
– 2.5% of your wealth (whatever you held for a year)

What are the wisdoms of Zakah?

Zakah refers to meanings of
1) To purify
2) To increase

– Both these things apply to the process of giving charity. How?
– It is a means of purfying our wealth and hearts from selfishness, greed and miserliness
– When you give Zakah, Allah will give back what you gave and more. Your money will be showered with barakah
– Remember, your money is the right of the poor so when you give zakah your are returning a right to the owner
– A means of protection of your Islam and Imaan

أَلَا لَهُ الْخَلْقُ وَالْأَمْرُ تَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ ﴾ [الأعراف: 54]
“Indeed, for Allah is creation and command- glorified is He, lord of the worlds” [Al A’raf: 54]

– If Allah is the ultimate creator and legislator, then He knows us better than we know our ownselves
– Allah knows the effects of wealth on our souls so He legislated charity
– If you are going through financial distress – give in charity
– Place your reliance in Allah not in your wealth
– If you give, you will get back – trust Allah
– The Prophet (s) once advised Bilal: “Bilal, stand! And do not fear from the owner of the Arsh, poverty.”
– Some of the tribes of Arabia would say, “Accept Islam because Muhammad (s) gives like the one who doesn’t fear poverty.”
– Giving Zakah protects your wealth

Pearl from Surah alMaa’oon

April 20, 2016 by Sajid Umar Leave a Comment

#TadabburTuesday

Assalamualaikum everyone. Pray you well.

Allah Almighty opens Surah alMaa’oon or Surah adDeen with the following 3 aayaat…

1. “Have you seen him who denies the Final Judgement?”
2. “Then such is the man who repulses the orphan (with harshness),”
3. “And encourages not the feeding of the indigent.”

Explanation:

These aayaat were revealed referring to the idolators in Makkah specifically and generally to everyone who is guilty of disbelief and not looking after the rights of the weak, especially the orphans.

Now Imam ashShawkaani the famous later Yemeni scholar shares an interesting insight when explaining these aayaat.

In his citations he brings our attention to the relationship between the first verse, in which Allah describes those who deny belief in the hereafter and the day of Judgement, and the proceeding two verses which basically denote crimes towards mankind.

He interestingly says that a collective look over these aayaat teach us that after a person denies being taken to account; everything else becomes easy for him…
If you don’t fear authority, you are your own authority and you do as you please.

Whilst this understsnding is from common sense, especially for the people of belief, it is important that we as people of belief keep this citation close to our hearts….

Why?

Well, if we are people of belief and especially belief in the day of Judgement. If we are people who have accepted the presence of a greater authority then how can crimes against other human beings and humanity actually eminate from us!?

Today my dear brothers and sisters, we may not shun the poor and the orphans as is being described in the verses, may Allah protect us, but we do find elements of the ummah engaged in backbiting, bad bussiness transactions, treachery, gossip, slander, oppression and other sever crimes against humanity.

Let us ponder over this revelation and let us ponder over our belief in the day of recompense (qiyaamah) and let us judge our deeds and actions in light of the this belief.

May Allah forgive our past and inspire our futures. Ameen.

Help on understanding the tafseer book alKash-Shaaf of azZamakhshari

April 20, 2016 by Sajid Umar Leave a Comment

Question:

Assalaamu’alaikum Sheikh Sajid, please share books that an advanced student can use to better understand the tafseer book alKash-Shaaf of Imam azZamakhsahri. Jazakallah Khair.

Answer:

باسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله وعلى آله وأصحابه ومن والاه

Wa’alaykum Salaam dear brother. May Allah bless you and increase your knowledge. Ameen.

Kash-shaaf is definitely a book of tafseer that fits in the advanced range of tafseer books and a book that some researchers and advanced students, if not many, have difficulty taking a deep understanding from given the intensity showcased by the author when presenting his explanations.

There are two books which I would refer to, as advised by my teachers, in order to learn the deeper meanings of alKash-shaaf, and they are;

1. atTahreer watTanweer of the famous later scholar Taahir ibn Aashoor (May Allah shower his mercy upon him), and,

2. The Tafseer book of a well-known later scholar, Abu asSa’ood, which is known as Irshaad alAql asSaleem.

And Allah Almighty knows best.

Have you ever considered how the last surah that teaches us about the hell fire in the Qur’an is surah alHumazah?

Have you ever considered how this surah has one of most, if not the most, severest descriptions of the hellfire? Allah calls the hell fire in this surah: “the Fire of Allah” and not ” the fire of jahannam” as we see in other surahs.

Have you ever considered how this mighty punishment is discussed in light of a person who possesses bad character and has a heart filled with the love for the financial standing and material well-being of this world?

The lesson:

#ReflectionFriday

Imaam Ibn AlQayyim in his infamous book Madaarij asSalikeen states:

“How many people are blinded by apparent blessings that are actually leading them to destruction?

How many people are deceived by the praises of the ignorant lavished upon them?

How many people are deluded by the facilitation of their worldly needs, and the way that Allah conceals their flaws?

Most people measure success and happiness by these three things. And that is due to their lack of understanding.”

Subhanallah! Wise eloquent words.

May Allah protect us from deception.
May Allah protect us from viewing our eases as God Almighty being entirely pleased with us and may Allah Almighty protect us from viewing our difficulties as a sign of Allah Almighty punishing us. May Allah bless us with obedience and make us a people that always have good hope in Him. Ameen…
