Q&A: We always hear the common saying ‘wealth is evil’. Is a rich Muslim a bad thing?

May 30, 2016 by Sajid Umar Leave a Comment

Assalaamu alaykum warahmatullahi wabaraktuhu,

Question: We always hear the common saying ‘wealth is evil’. Is a rich Muslim a bad thing?

Answer:

In Islam wealth is not considered evil in and of itself, but Its praiseworthy or evil status is dependent on the heart and hand of it’s owner, and the manner in which it is aquired and spent. There are several evidences from our Islamic sources that substantiate the above. From them are the following considerations:

1. The many Qur’aanic and prophetic injunctions related to trade and finance. Had wealth been inheritantly evil; Islam would have not gone the distance in detailing the dos and dont’s of these arenas.

2. The Messenger (SAW) traded and inspired us to earn citing for us, in a praiseworthy manner, how he was a shephard during his early life.

Should I do what I love or what I am good at?

May 30, 2016 by Sajid Umar Leave a Comment

Should I do what I love or what I am good at?

This is a common question I have heard over the years of doing da’wah and being involved in youth development and empowerment.

The reality is for years, as is on record, I have had the belief that a Muslim especially should do what he/she is good at, and not follow their passion. It is my sincere belief that If you do what you are good at; it will become your passion.

Guidance to mankind, like water to fish

May 30, 2016 by Sajid Umar Leave a Comment

#ReflectionFriday

We always need guidance. Even when we think we’re on the straight path and in the right direction, we still need guidance along the way.

In fact, Ibn al Qayyim has said that guidance is more important to mankind then water is to a fish! We need it to breathe and live, rather than merely exist.

The Ring of the Messenger (saw)…

May 30, 2016 by Sajid Umar Leave a Comment

Anas bin Malik (r) narrates…

“Once the Prophet (peace be upon him) wrote a letter or had an idea of writing a letter. The Prophet was told that they (rulers) would not read letters unless they were sealed. So the Prophet got a silver ring made with “Muhammad Allah’s Messenger” engraved on it. As if I were just observing its white glitter in the hand of the Prophet (s).”

A week that has replenished my heart and soul…

May 30, 2016 by Sajid Umar Leave a Comment

Assalamualaikum everyone.

I’ve just spent a week in the UK under the patronage of one of our charities; Charity Right, a charity that feeds over 9 million meals to children living in the most famine struck areas on earth.

It is a week that has kept me away from my family and you all, and a week that has been a means of replenishing my heart and soul as well.

Everyone needs spiritual upliftment, even propagators of the religion, and my time with Sheikh Tawfique Chaudhury and our teams helped develop my Imaan in a special way. There is just no way to describe the emotions I feel when I am with my brothers and sisters in the service of the ummah for the sake of Allah. For me it is exciting and addictive.

My visit to the refugee camps in Calais…

May 30, 2016 by Sajid Umar Leave a Comment

Assalaamu alaykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu,

I went to the refugee camps in Calais, France. The situation there is dire. None of us would give up our life for this place. But then… I met this Legend Wallahi!

He And his family cook 1000 meals daily for some of the most unsettled people on earth!

His young boy can cook 80kgs of rice a day and they work 24 hours a day in the service of their fellow brothers and sisters. They have given up everything and emptied their bank balances to assist the ummah for the sake of Allah.

There are 6000+ people here of the ummah of Muhammed SAW being helped by a handful of volunteers, 95 percent of which are non-Muslim.

Where are we O Ummah of Muhammed SAW!

Sitting in your library, office, Facebook and whatsapp/Telegram groups maybe a good thing, but I seriously doubt it being the RIGHT thing.

Please watch this video and take great inspiration from brother Jamaal and his amazing family!

Please share this video as well. May Allah bless you all and make us aspire to inspire. Ameen.

Aminah&Abdullah Series: ‘Prophet Yusuf, The Special One’ – Part 2

May 19, 2016 by Sajid Umar Leave a Comment

Yusuf ‘Alaihissalam [The Special One-Part 2]

“Aminah, did you know, Yusuf (AS)’s older brothers threw him in the well, and went back to their house and told their father a lie, that a  wolf had killed him.”

Abdullah continued to narrate the story of Yusuf (AS) to Aminah as they both sat in their comfortable room, eating marshmallows served with hot chocolate. Nearby, Ummi sat reading a book, whilst sipping on a cup of freshly brewed green tea at the house balcony.

The Dark Well

“So then, Yusuf  (AS) ran and screamed as he was thrown in the dry well and none of his brothers came to rescue him. He was alone in the darkness of the well.”

“Wow.” replied, Aminah. “I’m trying to imagine how it must have felt to be in the bottom of a dark hole.”

“How do you think he was feeling, Aminah?” Abdullah asked and then popped a marshmallow into his mouth.

“Hmm..’ Aminah put on her thinking face. “He must have felt really cold, hungry, scared, alone, afraid.. actually terrified.”

“Yes, Aminah. But you know what is amazing, he put his trust in Allah, and sought the help from Almighty Allah.” Abdullah added.

“It was at this time Yusuf  (AS)  knew he has one God who will never fail him. His brothers were not his true helpers. The true helper was Allah, the Lord of the Kingdom.”

“Abdullah, Aminah!” Ummi called out from the balcony.

“Yes, ummi.” they both replied.

“Abi will be home soon. I need you to help me cook, please.”

“Sure!” Aminah, replied.

“Oh man.” Abdullah sighed. “But we were in the middle of a story.”

“That’s okay.” Ummi walked over. “You can always continue the story in the kitchen.”

Abdullah still didn’t look impressed.

“What are we cooking, Ummi?” Aminah asked excitedly.

“You and Abdullah will be making nutella stuffed french toasts whilst I will cook the main dish, chicken fajitas.”

“DELICIOUUUUSSSS. I can’t wait to eat it!” Aminah was jumping up and down out of joy. She loved chocolate.

A few minutes later, everyone was in the kitchen. Aminah was cracking and whisking eggs whilst Abdullah melted the butter.

“Abdullah…” Ummi took off her oven glove. “Do you think Yusuf (AS) brothers were intelligent as they had the most brilliant ideas to make Yusuf disappear from his father’s sight?” Ummi asked thoughtfully.

“Umm,I don’t think so. Ya’qub (AS) was a prophet of Allah, their ideas would not be a clever escape, the truth would always prevail. Allah would certainly guide Yusuf (AS) and his father from their difficulties. Also, throwing someone in a well is not an intelligent thing to do.”  Abdullah answered to Ummi’s captivating question.

Aminah smiled.

“You’re right, Abdullah.”

“Aminah,.”

“Yes, ummi.”

“Could you recite the first 5 verses of Surah Yusuf, please? You were supposed to memorise them this week.”

“Ummm..” Aminah bit her lower lip. “I…I didn’t memorise, Ummi.”

“Oh, but you told me you did.”

Abdullah looked at his sister in dismay.

“Umm, I.. umm… lied, Ummi.” tears began to fall from Aminah’s eyes. She was so upset with herself that she unknowingly dropped a whole egg on the floor.

Abdullah gasped.

Ummi hurriedly grabbed the cloth from the sink and began wiping the trickles of egg yolk that were falling from the counter.

Aminah ran off in anger.

After Ummi and Abdullah had cleaned the mess from the floor, they went to check on Aminah who had plunged herself onto the couch and was still weeping quietly.

“Oh, Aminah.” Ummi began. “Please don’t beat yourself up. When you make a mistake or commit a sin, you immediately ask for forgiveness and then learn from it so you don’t fall into it again, right?”

“Yes, Ummi.” Aminah said through sniffles.

Abdullah’s face lightened up. “The brothers of Yusuf (AS) told a lie to Yaqub (AS) and it wasn’t an intelligent thing to do…”

“- But” Ummi raised her eyebrows at Abdullah.

“Adam (AS) and his wife also made a mistake when they ate from the forbidden tree, yet when they turned back to Allah, he forgave them.”

“Oh, oh.. and later on in the story of Yusuf (AS), the brothers were forgiven by Allah for their mistakes and sins that they had committed earlier on in life.”

“Exactly.” Ummi said.

Aminah sat up. “O Allah, forgive me for lying like you forgave the brothers of Yusuf (AS) and Adam (AS).”

“Ameen!” Ummi and Abdullah said in unison.

“Now… Abi wil be home in five minutes, whilst we wait, who wants to read some Surah Yusuf?”

“Me!” Aminah said gleefully.

“Me too.” Abdullah followed.
