Question: Are we females allowed to pluck our eyebrows or dye our eyebrows a different colour?

Answer:

باسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله وعلى آله وأصحبه ومن والاه

May Allah Almighty reward you for your question and your desire to live on this earth the way Allah Almighty decrees that you live.

In a narration captured by Imam alBukhari and Imam Muslim; the Messenger (Peace and Blessings be upon Him) is reported to have said:

“The woman who plucks facial hair and the woman who has this plucking done are cursed.”

The usage of the term ‘cursed’ as a description in the text of our Shariah refers to something being Haraam and impermissible and forbidden. Hence, there is no difference of opinion between the scholars that plucking one’s eyebrows is forbidden.

With regards to dyeing the eyebrow; The general principle in the Shariah is that everything which is not related to the direct worship of Allah Almighty will be considered as acceptable and permitted unless there is established evidence stating otherwise. Based on this rule; it is permisisble to dye one’s eyebrow even if the colour causes the hair of the brow to become camouflaged by the colour of one’s skin.

However our scholars have shared some necessary conditions that a person should be sensitive towards when colouring their eyebrows to protect the permissibility of the act. These conditions are as follows:

1. That the dye used be one that does not prevent water from reaching the actual hair of the brow as it is important during wudhu and ghusl for the water to actually reach this area.

2. That the dye used is not one which burns the eyebrow and actually causes the hair of the brow to fall off.

3. That the colouring process is not done using a laser which causes the original colour of the hair of the brow to permanenetly change.

And Allah knows best.

Before ending off, it should be noted that the marriage consideration process is a protected one in the Shariah and thus both parties must be honest in terms of their appearence in front of the other so as to avoid any conflict later on in the marriage. May Allah Almighty bless us and our marriages- Ameen.
