Assalaamualaikum Sheikh. I have earned wealth in a questionable manner and have sought forgiveness from Allah. Do I have to give my wealth away as well?
…..
Wa alaykum Salam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakaatuh dear brother.
May Allah bless you for writing in and enquiring. Indeed your question is a sign of sincere repentance and indeed Allah Almighty is the most forgiving and forgives all as long as we sincerely seek forgiveness and repent before our soul departs us.
Dear brother, our scholars state that in the circumstances you have described and after sincere repentance; a person is permitted to take from the wealth earned in a wrong way the amount necessary to prevent them from ending up in a state of need. Thereafter, they should give the remainder of that wealth to the poor and needy.
To understand further what entails ‘need’ in your circumstance; I advise you to visit your local scholar who is well versed with the realities of your locality and seek a worthy clarification and move forward based on the advice shared.
May Allah Almighty bless us and our wealth. Ameen.
And Allah Almighty knows best.
Your brother
Sajid Umar
