#SaturdaySunnahReflections – Bad Dreams

#SaturdaySunnahReflections – Sheikh Sajid Umar Telegram Channel –

It was narrated from Jaabir that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “If any one of you sees a dream that he dislikes, let him spit drily to his left three times and seek refuge with Allah from the Shaytaan three times, and turn over onto his other side.”

(Narrated by Imam Muslim, 2262).

Lesson:

Many people write in asking about waking up at night due to bad dreams and the Islamic teaching related to them. The narration above cites three etiquettes related to this topic as follows:

1. We should turn our head to the left and spit drily three times. This refers to spitting without the spittle. The wisdom behind this is to chase away shaitaan and his associates so that they cease to disturb us during our dream state.

2. Seek refuge in Allah Almighty. This is done by saying:

أعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم

aoothu bil-laahi minash shaytaanir rajeem

Or by seeking refuge in Allah from shaitaan in a language you speak.

3. Turning to the opposite side to the side you were sleeping facing and attempting to go back to sleep. So if he was facing his right side, he should now face his left and vice-versa.

It should be noted as well that that from the etiquettes of seeing a bad dream is that we do not seek an interpretation for it. This is the teaching of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and found in many an authentic narration.

And Allah knows best.
