The Supplication of the Bedouins
October 9, 2024

Umar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “There are no people more similar to the early generations (the Salaf) than the Bedouins, were it not for a certain roughness in them.”

And Ghaylān said: “If you want to hear a supplication, listen to the supplication of the Bedouins.”

An Arab man made a supplication while circumambulating the Ka’bah, saying: “O my Lord, who is more deserving of shortcomings and mistakes than me, for You have created me? And who is more worthy of forgiving me than You, for Your knowledge of me is everlasting, and Your decree surrounds me? I obeyed You by Your strength, and the favour belongs to You, and I disobeyed You with Your knowledge. So, I ask You, O my Lord, by Your boundless mercy, the invalidity of my excuses, my need of You, and Your independence from me—to forgive me and have mercy on me. My Lord, I did not do well until You granted me the ability, so pardon the sins You have recorded against me.

O Allah, we have obeyed You in the most beloved matter to You—the testimony that there is no god but You alone, without a partner—and we have not disobeyed You in the most hated matter to You—associating others with You. So forgive me for what lies between these two. O Allah, You are the most intimate companion to Your close ones, and You are ever-present for those who rely upon You. My Lord, You witness them whether they are present or absent, and You know what is in their hearts. My secret is exposed to You, and I am longing for You. If estrangement makes me feel lonely, Your remembrance comforts me. If worries overwhelm me, I seek refuge in You, knowing that all matters are in Your control and that their origins lie in Your decree. So return me to You forgiven, protected by Your obedience for the rest of my life. O Most Merciful of the merciful.”
