ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhumā) reported: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said,
❝If the treasures of Persia and Rome were opened for you, what kind of people will you be?❞
ʿAbdur-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) replied,
❝We will be as Allāh has ordered us.❞
The Prophet ﷺ responded,
❝Perhaps you will be something else. You will compete with each other, then envy each other, then turn away from each other, then hate each other—and so on. Then you will go to the poor emigrants and make some of them masters over others.❞ (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)
Ibn Rajab (raḥimahu Allāh) reported: When the treasures of Khosrau were opened for ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu), he wept and said,
❝Indeed, the likes of this were never opened for a people except that Allāh made it a cause of discord between them.❞
